The product range of the quartz specialist PETERMANN-TECHNIK includes SMD crystals with very low resistance for extremely fast and reliable oscillation. These include the SMD03025/4 series (in a 3.2x2.5mm/4pad ceramic housing) and SMD02016/4 (in a 2.0x1.6mm/4pad ceramic housing). During our extensive in-circuit tests, we repeatedly find that the negative input resistances of the tested oscillator stages are very low and that there is even very large variation from IC to IC. However, the applications have to become smaller and smaller, so that the development engineers have to resort to small crystal housings.

However, SMD crystals in smaller housings have higher resistances compared to SMD crystals with the same frequency in larger housings and oscillate more slowly and unstably in the oscillator stage due to the higher resistances. For example, the LOW ESR crystals with the standard frequency of 32 MHz have an ESR of 6 Ohm typical (SMD03025/4 series) or 15 Ohm typical (SMD02016/4 series). When used in radio applications, these LOW ESR crystals with 32 MHz enable very fast and extremely reliable transient behaviour, so that the corresponding radio applications can transmit optimally and extremely energy-efficiently within the specified duty cycles. Both crystal series can be supplied with a frequency tolerance of <±10ppmat 25°C and temperature stabilities of ±10ppm@-20/+70°C, ±15ppm@-40/+85°C, ±30ppm@-40/+105°C and ±50ppm@-40/+125°C respectively. Of course, automotive versions (AECQ200) are also available in both ceramic housings. The frequency spectrum of the 3.2x2.5mm crystal is 8 - 80 MHz in the fundamental range. The 2.0x1.6mm crystal of the SMD2016/4 series is available in the frequency range from 20 - 64 MHz. The SMD03025/4 series crystal in a 3.2x2.5mm ceramic housing is the world's cheapest available crystal series. In applications for which the 3.2x2.5mm ceramic housing is too large, the specialists at PETRMANN-TECHNIK recommend using the compact 2.0x1.6mm ceramic housing version of the SMD2016/4 series. This housing was developed in parallel to the 3.2x2.5mm as a further high-volume housing and is also available at a very favourable price. Versions of both quartz series are available that can be used in housings that are ultrasonically welded. Of course, reduced-resistance 32,768 kHz crystals are also available in the PETERMANN-TECHNIK product range.
