LOW-COST AUTOMOTIVE SMD OSCILLATORS FOR SAFE WIRING SYSTEMS

The clocking specialists at PETERMANN-TECHNIK show how the right choice of automotive oscillators can save a lot of money and make the application extremely safe.

Current situation:

Due to the ever-increasing complexity of electronics in modern vehicles and the ever-increasing packing density on miniaturised circuit boards, the demand for very small frequency-determining components continues to grow. In many applications, it is also necessary to switch from an AEC-Q200-compatible SMD crystal to an AEC-Q100-compatible SMD oscillator. The designer requires either a higher temperature range, a more precise frequency tolerance or a smaller housing for his application in order to meet the requirement for PCB miniaturisation. This can no longer be realised with a crystal without compensation. In addition, the resistance of crystals in small housings increases dramatically due to the technology used, meaning that the safety factor of ≥10 required by vehicle manufacturers can no longer be met, as the oscillator stage can no longer drive the higher crystal resistances within the required safety range. With an automotive oscillator, higher loads can be driven and several ICs can be clocked simultaneously, so that safe switching on of the circuit can be realised under all circumstances. Unlike the quartz crystal, the oscillator does not require any space-consuming external circuit capacities, so that a smaller PCB can be developed.

Extreme longevity and high accuracy:

An MTBF of 1000 million hours. 50,000g stock and 70g vibration resistance paired with the Industry Best Vibration Sensitivity of 0.1ppb/G are not just desired values, but correspond to the standard environmental conditions that the SMD oscillators of the LPO-AUT (-40/+85°C), HTLPO-AUT (40/+105°C and -40/+125°C) and WTLPO-AUT (-55/+125°C) series comply with, thereby also setting the best value on the market for automotive SMD oscillators. All automotive oscillators can be supplied with frequency stabilities from ±20ppm over the required temperature range (also -55/+125°C) with an ageing of ±5ppm after 10 years. This means that the automotive oscillators are highly accurate and can be used in all automotive applications such as infotainment systems, collision warning systems, automotive Ethernet, vision systems, transmission control systems, black boxes, sensors, etc.

Safe applications:

The requirements of vehicle manufacturers are becoming more and more stringent. The communication setup with external devices via Bluetooth in infotainment systems must function faster and faster. Automotive Ethernet, or the on-board networks in general, must also be clocked ever more precisely in order to become even more efficient. Transmission control units require very high temperature ranges and extreme shock and vibration resistance, which can no longer be met with a quartz crystal due to the technology involved. However, with the automotive oscillators from the PETERMANN-TECHNIK product range.

VDD range 2.25 - 3.63 VDC / Low Power:

The low power AEC-Q100 compatible automotive oscillators of the series mentioned, which are available in the frequency range from 1 - 137 MHz, have highly innovative CMOS ICs that not only consume very little power, but can also be operated in the supply voltage range of 2.25 - 3.63 VDC (3.3VDC or 3.0 VDC, or 2.8 VDC or 2.5VDC) with any supply voltage.

Gone are the days when a separate oscillator had to be elaborately specified, tested, qualified, purchased and managed for each accuracy and each supply voltage! The "-XX-" versions (2.25 - 3.63VDC) save an enormous amount of money throughout the entire process! In addition, the number of components can be drastically reduced, which results in significantly lower infrastructure costs in purchasing and warehouse management (reduction of capital tied up in the warehouse, etc.). Larger quantities of a component also mean more favourable prices.

With the supply voltage range of 2.25 - 3.63 VDC and the accuracy of ±20ppm@-55/+125°C, for example, the low cost / low power automotive oscillators can be used in any automotive application,

For example, the current consumption of the automotive oscillators is typically 6.2mA@2.25 - 3.63 VDC at a frequency of 125 MHz. A conventional quartz oscillator requires 40 mA. This means that the automotive oscillators also fulfil the demand for modern components that consume less and less power. Samples in all common frequencies are available immediately from the PETERMANN-TECHNIK warehouse, and special frequencies can be supplied within a few days.

SolftLevel function reduces EMC:

A normal LVCMOS square wave signal has sharp-edged edges, which can lead to EMC problems in many automotive applications. The highly innovative CMOS ICs used make it possible to extend the rise and fall time of the output signal by up to 45%, so that EMC attenuation of the 11th harmonic by over -60 dB can be realised by extending the TR/TF time. An enormous value for such a simple adjustment of thetrise and tfall time, which does not cost the customer any money but is part of the standard performance. Another major advantage that speaks in favour of the excellent performance of PETERMANN-TECHNIK's automotive oscillators.

Wide range of housings - choice of housing

All automotive oscillators are available in standard housings with the dimensions 2.0x1.6mm; 2.5x2.0mm; 3.2x2.5mm; 5.0x3.2mm and 7.0x5.0mm. The housings with dimensions of 2.0x1.6mm and 2.5x2.0mm are most commonly used for new designs. However, the tendency is more in the direction of 2.0x1.6mm. Both housings are available for the long term.

Obsolence management:

PETERMANN-TECHNIK naturally has an optimised obsolence management system. The specialists at PETERMANN-TECHNIK only recommend products to their customers that are available for at least 10 years.

Conclusion:

By using the described automotive oscillators in the supply voltage range of 2.25 - 3.63VDC ("-XX-" versions) with the very narrow frequency tolerances of ±20ppm, a lot of money can be saved in the entire process, as fewer products have to be tested, procured and stored. In addition, the EMC behaviour can be significantly improved by simply adjusting the output signal. PETERMANN-TECHNIK products are very small, inexpensive, extremely durable, have a long service life and can be used in all automotive applications. The specialists at PETERMANN-TECHNIK offer detailed advice. Their own application engineers not only provide comprehensive technical services during the design-in process and large-scale production, but can also carry out circuit tests in accordance with vehicle manufacturer standards. One for all, for the benefit of the customer. PETERMANN-TECHNIK "your clocking expert"!
