Why do without smaller designs?

Even smaller 32,768 kHz crystals (e.g. 2.0 x 1.2 mm or 1.6 x 1.2 mm) are often used in the miniaturisation of PCBs. However, these models usually have significantly higher ESR values (up to 90 kΩ) and are much more expensive than the M3215RR. The higher resistance of these miniaturised 32,768 kHz crystals can lead to oscillation problems with many 32,768 kHz oscillator stages (not only at +25°C, but also in particular over the specified operating temperature range) - and at higher product prices.

We therefore recommend sticking with the tried and tested 3.2 x 1.5 mm/2-pad ceramic housing. This offers the ideal balance of compact design, electrical stability and economic efficiency - even for demanding automotive applications, for which M3215RR variants are also available.

Technical options and availability

The M3215RR 32.768 kHz crystals are available with different load capacities (4 pF, 6 pF, 7 pF, 9 pF and 12.5 pF) - generally available directly from stock.

Recommendation for the development engineer

Many development engineers have to design small circuit boards/applications. It is much more favourable to use the M3215RR in combination with a very small MHz crystal in a 1.6x1.2mm/4pad ceramic package than a small 32.768kHz crystal (e.g. in a 2.0x1.2mm or 1.6x1.0mm ceramic package) in combination with a larger MHz SMD crystal.
