The increasing miniaturisation of IoT and IIoT applications presents developers with major challenges when selecting suitable oscillating crystals. Smaller designs generally lead to higher ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) values for quartz crystals, which makes fast and reliable oscillation more difficult in circuit design. In addition, miniature crystals usually have low drive level values, which requires precise adjustment of the crystal current.
With the SMD01612/4 series, PETERMANN-TECHNIK GmbH offers a resistance-reduced solution based on the exclusive LRT technology (Low ESR Resonator Technology). These low-resistance resonant crystals can be quickly and easily integrated into existing designs. Due to the very low resistance, the innovative LRT quartz crystal enables significantly faster and safer transient behaviour, which reduces the current consumption of the circuit and results in lower power requirements. PETERMANN-TECHNIK GmbH thus supports its customers not only in their technical performance, but also in their endeavours to achieve sustainability and energy efficiency.
The typical radio ICs have a Pierce oscillator, which means that the SMD01612/4 crystal can be connected directly to XIN/XOUT. The frequency is adjusted via internally programmable capacitances or external circuit capacitances - and the oscillator circuit is complete.
The SMD01612/4 series covers the frequency range from 24 - 285 MHz. The frequency tolerance at +25°C is a maximum of +-10ppm. Over the temperature range of -20/+70°C the temperature stability is +-10ppm max. and +-15ppm max. over the temperature range of -40/+85°C. Ageing over 10 years is a maximum of +-10ppm - so the crystals also fulfil demanding international standards, for example in Japan.
With a typical drive level of 100 µW (200 µW max.), the SMD01612/4 series oscillating crystals are compatible with all common wireless ICs - e.g. for applications in LoRa, LoRaWAN, ISM band, Matter, Bluetooth, BLE, Sigfox, ZigBee and other standards.
Another advantage: independent supply chains. Quartz production takes place in two separate production lines using specially developed ceramic housings, which are sourced from various fine ceramic manufacturers. This enables PETERMANN-TECHNIK GmbH to guarantee maximum delivery reliability.
The range is rounded off by a specialised service portfolio, which also includes in-circuit tests if required. Users can use the product configurator to configure the right quartz resonator from the SMD01612/4 series based on their desired parameters and request samples or quotations directly: https://www.petermann-technik.de/produkte/quarz-konfigurator/details/smd-crystal-16×12-mhz.html
In smart cities, communication takes place using a wide variety of wireless standards. For example, via LoRa, LoRaWAN, in the ISM band, in the Matter standard, via Bluetooth or BLE, in Sigfox, ZigBee and other standards.
Oscillating crystals in SMD MINI ceramic housing 1.6×1.2mm/4pad of the SMD01612/4 series are the standard for small wireless modules, among other things. Based on the exclusive LRT technology, this SMD quartz series has very low resistances for very fast transient response, which reduces the current consumption of the circuit and results in lower power requirements.
