The unique Ultra Low Power Micro Oscillator of the "ULPO" series has a power consumption of 50µA at 2.048 MHz with a supply voltage of 1.8VDC. This means that the "ULPO" has 30 times lower current consumption than a comparable TCXO (clipped sine wave output signal), or even 200 times lower current consumption than a normal clock oscillator (CMOS/TTL compatible) with 2,048 MHz.
With housing dimensions of 1.5 x 0.8mm, the low cost ultra low power oscillator of the "ULPO" series saves an enormous amount of space on the circuit board and is 85% smaller than an oscillator in a 3.2x2.5mm housing.
The "ULPO", which is currently available in the frequency range from 1 - 26 MHz, can be supplied in a temperature range of up to -40/+85°C and, as a further advantage, can tackle a minimum of two ICs simultaneously. Due to the technology, a small MHz crystal has a very high resistance, which often leads to insufficient oscillation stability of the oscillator stage of the IC/MCU/SoC used. The use of an ultra-low-power MHz oscillator from the "ULPO" series always offers optimum transient oscillation immunity.
Normally, one or more frequency-determining components, mainly crystals, are used for clocking IC/MCU/SoC components. The crystal itself does not consume any power, but a circuit clocked with a crystal consumes more power than a circuit clocked with a low cost ultra low power oscillator of the ULPO series. This is due to the fact that the on-chip oscillator stage has to use a lot of energy to operate the crystal. The larger the crystal resistor, the more energy is required to make it oscillate or keep it oscillating. However, if the IC/MCU/SoC is clocked by an ultra low power oscillator (switched directly to XIN - see image below), then the on-chip oscillator can be bypassed by the IC/MCU/SoC and the device can be clocked directly from the ULPO. This can save a lot of energy and extend the battery life.
The combination of extremely low power consumption and ultra-compact package makes this oscillator based on highly innovative CMOS technology ideal for use in battery-powered applications such as wearables, GPS, smartphones, tablets, health and wellness monitors, sports video cameras, loT, smart metering, smart housing, industrial, wireless ISM band, cameras, Bluetooth headsets, consumer and embedded computing applications.
