FAQ questions and answers

What role does the ESR value play in ensuring that an oscillator circuit starts oscillating reliably?

The ESR value plays a key role in ensuring that an oscillator circuit starts oscillating reliably, as a low ESR improves the starting conditions for the crystal and increases the oscillation margin. The lower the equivalent series resistance of the crystal, the easier it is for the oscillator circuit to establish stable oscillations, even if the value of the negative input resistance of the oscillator stage (XIN/XOUT) is low or critical.

An oscillator circuit must excite the crystal upon power-up and subsequently maintain a stable oscillation. If the ESR is too high, the available gain of the circuit may be insufficient. This can result in delayed start-up, unstable operation or complete start-up failure.

This is particularly critical at low supply voltages, with low currents, at low or high temperatures, and when using miniaturised crystals or low-power ICs. In such applications, a crystal with low ESR is a crucial safety factor.

Why is PETERMANN-TECHNIK the right partner for ESR-critical applications?

PETERMANN-TECHNIK GmbH exclusively offers SMD-LRT crystal oscillators featuring LOW-ESR technology, which are specifically designed to ensure reliable start-up and robust performance. We assist customers in selecting suitable clock generators and advise on the optimisation of the crystal, load capacity and oscillator circuit.

This enables our customers to reduce the risk of start-up problems and enhance the reliability of their end product. PETERMANN-TECHNIK does not merely supply a crystal, but provides assurance for the entire timing concept, based on 30 years of application experience.
