An SMD clock crystal with low ESR, reliable settling behaviour and suitable load capacitance is particularly suitable as a replacement for a THT 32,768 kHz clock crystal ;for example, the M3215RR from PETERMANN-TECHNIK. The switch from THT to SMD is relevant not only mechanically but also electrically.
THT crystal oscillators often have larger resonators and comparatively low resistance. When they are replaced by very small SMD crystal oscillators, the ESR can be significantly higher. In existing oscillator circuits, this can lead to settling problems. Therefore, when replacing components, attention should not be paid solely to frequency and package type. The decisive factors are ESR, load capacitance, manufacturing quality, availability and suitability for mass production.
PETERMANN-TECHNIK GmbH recommends the 32,768 kHz SMD clock crystal for many applications M3215RR in a 3.2 x 1.5 mm / 2-pad ceramic package with a LOW-ESR design. It combines a modern SMD form factor with excellent start-up reliability, attractive cost-effectiveness and long-term usability.
We support customers in the technical evaluation of existing THT designs, in the selection of suitable SMD alternatives and in sample qualification. This makes the migration from THT to SMD safer, more efficient, more future-proof and very quick to implement.
