Which timing solution is suitable for smart meters, IoT and wireless modules?

Precise, low-impedance SMD crystal resonators or quartz oscillators from PETERMANN-TECHNIK, which are available over the long term, are suitable for smart meters, IoT and wireless modules. The appropriate clock solution depends on the frequency, IC requirements, power consumption, temperature range, package size and desired system stability.

Smart meters, IoT devices and wireless modules have similar requirements: they must start up reliably, consume little energy, communicate accurately and operate stably over long periods. The clock source is key to this. Depending on the application, a passive SMD crystal (sensor) or a quartz oscillator (TCXO for gateways or long-range radio) may be the right choice.

A crystal is particularly suitable when the IC has its own oscillator circuit and the aim is to optimise space, cost and power consumption. A quartz oscillator, such as a TCXO (temperature-compensated quartz oscillator), may be appropriate where the application places high demands on accuracy and radio range.
