Long-term availability of quartz crystals and oscillators is important because a frequency-generating component that is no longer available can lead to redesigns, new approvals, additional testing, delivery delays and high follow-on costs. Particularly in long-life industrial, smart meter, automotive, medical and IoT products, the clock source is a strategic production component.

A quartz crystal is often specified early in the design process and then used unchanged for many years. If this component is discontinued or can no longer be reliably supplied, the customer must qualify an alternative. This may necessitate layout changes, electrical tests, EMC assessments, software tests or new approvals.

For this reason, a product that is technically suitable and available for the long term should be selected as early as the development phase. A cheap, short-term purchase can prove costly later on if availability is not guaranteed.
