Since the early 1980s, the Ethernet standard has evolved from a simple communication method between computer networks to the most widely used protocol in industrial communication. Copper cables, whether 2-pair for Fast Ethernet or 4-pair for Gigabit Ethernet, form the backbone of many corporate and industrial networks. The introduction of Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) technology, inspired by developments in the automotive industry, is now opening up completely new fields of application. This technology makes it possible to replace traditional analog sensor applications or industrial bus systems with more efficient solutions.

Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) provides the necessary infrastructure for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). With SPE, Ethernet can communicate from the cloud to the field level in a space- and cost-efficient manner for the first time. Single Pair Ethernet describes the transmission of Ethernet via just one pair of copper wires and, in addition to data transmission via Ethernet, also enables a simultaneouspower supply to end devices via PoDL - Power over Data Line. Previously, this required two pairs of wires for Fast Ethernet (100MB) or four pairs for Gigabit Ethernet. SPE now opens up completely new possibilities and fields of application for Industrial Ethernet.

Which housing versions/quartz specifications are currently preferred by customers?

The miniaturised 4Pad ceramic housing with the dimensions 3.2x2.5mm (quartz series SMD03025/4) is used in most applications. Oscillating crystals in a 3.2x2.5mm ceramic housing currently correspond to the cheapest quartz series ever. If this housing is too large for the application in question, the next smallest top-seller ceramic housing has the dimensions 2.0x1.6mm/4pad. For very small applications, the quartz frequency with 25 MHz can be supplied in a ceramic housing with the dimensions 1.6x1.2mm. With regard to the quartz parameters, the frequency tolerance at 25°C of ±20 ppm, the temperature stability of ±30 ppm above -40/+85°C or above -40/+105°C, or ±50 ppm above -40/+125°C have become established for SPE applications. The load capacitance is usually 12pF, but other load capacitances are also available.
